DESCRIPTION

*

Back in 2013, President Xi Jinping of People Republic of China (PRC) introduced his concept of ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR), or otherwise known as “Belt and Road” initiative. This initiative is derived from President Xi’s vision of an overland ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ and a ‘21st-Century Maritime Silk Road’. These are the two major routes along which China proposes to economically link Europe to China through countries across Eurasia and the Indian Ocean. The OBOR initiative also links to Africa and Oceania. In March 2015, the PRC issued an action plan for realising this initiative.The opportunities for countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ include large-scale developments in sectors such as infrastructure development, financial & professional services, e-commerce, cultural tourism & education, energy & resources, advanced manufacturing, and agriculture.However, there must be various questions that arise following the incident on 1 November 2016, when Malaysia signed 14 agreements with China amounting to RM 144 billion.Among others, what opportunities will be in store for Malaysian companies and individuals as a result of China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative? What are the challenges? How do we prepare for these opportunities and challenges beforehand? Will Malaysians be confined to bilateral trade and investment with China? Will there be business opportunities of a multi-lateral or multi-national nature?Join us at this lecture to hear from the industrial economist, Dr Peter Thong, regarding his perspectives to some of the questions raised above.
