We would like to focus on women’s mental health which affects them holistically. All gender issues, empowerment, etc affect women mentally. Empowerment has a lot to do with the mind. Once the will to hold on is gone, there’s nothing left and the body gives up. But those women who can think positively and know where to get help are the ones who will find ways to succeed. The mind controls the body – that’s why mental health is so important and women are different from men in a number of ways because they are more emotional. A number of issues only affect women alone eg child-bearing, marriage ( abuse and unfaithful husbands if the women are unfortunate), problems with in-laws, abortions, unwed mums, stress of household chores and bringing up children, gender disparity in the marketplace, trafficking of young girls into prostitution, menopause etc. More women suffer from depression, phobias and eating disorders than men and more girls self-harm than boys.

For this WMHS, we are going to focus more on empowerment for a more positive approach. We are collaborating with the Penang State Health Department and affiliates of the Mental Health Coalition of Penang (MHCP).

In addition to the Penang State Health Department, Social Welfare Department, Penang Family Health Development and National Council of Women’s Organization, a number of Mental Health NGOs and organizations will be setting up information booths. These are Women’s Centre for Change, Befrienders, Help4U, D’Home, Penang Association of Counselling and Psychology, Agape Counselling Centre, Seed Training & Counselling Centre and Access Consciousness.

Below is the full program for your information.

Thank you.
Yours truly,
