EXPERIENCE the Sikh culture at the state-level Vaisakhi celebration this Saturday at the Penang Times Square.
This will be the 12th year that such a celebration is being held in Penang.
State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo representing Penang Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the event would feature vibrant cultural performances such as bhangra and giddha, free Henna art and also an exhibition about the early Sikhs and their history in Malaysia.
“Authentic vegetarian Punjabi food will also be served for free on that day.
“The Sikhs may be small in numbers but we have contributed much to the society.
“Sikhs are regularly referred to as Benggalis by the locals at times and this is wrong. Sikhs come from Punjab (a northern state of India), so should be called Punjabis and not Benggalis,” he told a press conference in Komtar yesterday.
Jagdeep Singh said some 3,000 people were expected to attend the event organised by the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib and the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (Penang branch) with the support of the state government.
The event will be held from 6pm to 11pm.
