Knowledge is Power

Filed under: from the editor — mollyosc @ 2:20 pm

There are so many interesting and relevant materials for you in this blog.

Just scroll the right sidebar to browse through all the pages for you to read

We want TSNRA to be a residents’ association with a difference – one that

not only organizes healthy community activities for a healthy lifestyle, but also

one that will empower you with the knowledge you need in different areas of life.

Editorial : Knowledge & Wisdom

( extracted from the TSNRA Annual Bulletin )

In normal conversation, we use knowledge to mean knowing facts and information and knowing how to do something. A person who embraces knowledge will become successful in his chosen course. Knowledge comes before understanding, understanding comes before wisdom and fear of God comes before sound wisdom. Lockyer said that “wisdom is the ability to judge correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding”.

Knowledge is power and ‘people are destroyed from lack of knowledge’ ( Hosea ). Knowledge benefits the possessor. It is a natural process that starts from childhood. Our attitude towards learning affects our acquisition of knowledge. All teachers know that good learning attitudes pave the way to greater knowledge. Bad attitudes not only hinder a student’s progress in education but also lead to ignorance and other unpleasant consequences.

According to our government’s survey, Malaysians on the whole have not acquired the reading habit to acquire vast knowledge. Many of our young people lack general knowledge because they still prefer playing computer games or watching TV to reading a book. They may be IT-savvy and know how to source for the information they need, but Albert Einstein warns that “Information is not Knowledge”. And wisdom does not come just from accessing information online to complete an assignment. Very often, such information is forgotten or redundant once a task is done. Ask most students what they have learned from their history or moral lessons after leaving school and their answers will reveal whether they have acquired true knowledge or mere information.

I came across an interesting Arab proverb which states:”There are four kinds of people, three of which are to be avoided and the fourth cultivated: those who don’t know that they don’t know; those who know that they don’t know; those who don’t know that they know; and those who know that they know.” It simply means that knowledge is power to those who know how to use it wisely. Many of us can be overwhelmed with the deluge of information both in the mainstream media and cyberspace. That’s why discernment must come with together with knowledge.

TSNRA hopes that you will continue to grow in good health and knowledge. Above all, may you continue learning and growing in wisdom from day to day.

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.

Anyone who keeps learning stays young.

The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

– Henry Ford
