New avenue for residents to get in touch with the authorities

WITH about 170 residents associations in the Klang Valley, The Star’s People’s Voice campaign will provide a platform for residents to engage directly with their respective local authorities and relevant agencies.

“We want to bring all the RAs together. The Star would not be what it is today if not for you,” Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director and group chief editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai said during the official launch of the campaign at Menara Star, Petaling Jaya, on Sunday.

“In the past, a newspaper was strictly a print media. Now, we have SMS alerts, StarOnline, Web TV and three radio stations.

“As an integrated news organisation, we’ll be there as a bridge between RAs and the authorities. When we combine resources, we can have a louder voice,” Wong said.

Themed You’ve Got The Power, the campaign kicks off on May 9 at the BU3 community hall in collaboration with the Bandar Utama Residents Association and would see a total of 24 carnivals held over the course of one year at selected residential areas.

Among the activities lined up for the carnivals are forums with local authorities, performances, games and live broadcasts by RedFM.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, who launched the event, said the event signalled a change in the way local authorities could further focus on the needs of citizens and react quickly and efficiently.

“The platform provided by The Star and RedFM is simple and friendly. It is an accessible way for everyone, regardless of whether it is an individual, community or residents association, to voice their grouses, give feedback or, if we are lucky, commend local authorities on our work and initiatives.

“Ultimately, we are faced with new challenges every day and all local authorities and agencies must see this as an opportunity to be in tune with the heartbeat of their city and residents.

“The campaign will provide an innovative way for collaboration of communities and local authorities and will help us deliver better quality public services more efficiently,” Fuad said.

Besides more than a hundred representatives from the various residents associations in the Klang Valley, the launch was also witnessed by Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed.

After a question and answer session, the guests were entertained by local comedian Harith Iskandar.

Together with Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director Ng Beng Lye and RedFM chief executive officer Lim Cheng Hee, Wong, Fuad and Arjunaidi also unveiled the RedFM’s The People’s Voice cruiser.

According to Lim, besides being present at the carnival locations, the cruiser would also be visiting various locations in the Klang Valley over the weekdays.

We were delighted to read this article and have contacted Star. We are very keen to initiate the formation of a RA Council in Penang so that we will have a louder voice to liaise with the authorities.
